Air pollution has become a significant health concern for people living in Vietnam’s biggest cities, particularly for children. USAID’s Clean Air Green Cities activity is addressing air pollution and its health impacts in Hanoi by mobilizing a network of local partners (including youth, schools, communities, civic and social organizations, businesses, and local governments) to take collective action and advocate for clean air.
The United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) is a key international human rights treaty, which transforms people with disabilities into “rights holders” and “subjects of law” – able to participate fully in all aspects of social, political, economic and cultural life. Although Vietnam ratified CRPD in 2014, implementation has been uneven across the country.
A transgender woman is an individual who was born biologically male but whose gender identity is female. Worldwide, transgender women (TGW) are one of the most vulnerable populations, with an HIV acquisition risk 49 times that of the general population and a 19 percent HIV prevalence rate. However, little was known about TGW in Vietnam and HIV interventions for them have been limited.
Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is a game-changing preventive regimen that can reduce the risk of HIV infection by more than 92 percent, if taken daily, as part of a combination HIV prevention strategy. Since March 2017, USAID has launched PrEP pilot programs in Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi.
One of USAID’s objectives in Vietnam is to help local development organizations address locally-defined challenges. USAID recently organized a “Fundraising and External Relations” training workshop for 25 participants from 10 Vietnamese non-governmental organizations (VNGOs).
