Co Tu ethnic minority communities, who reside in the mountainous area of Quang Nam province, possess a unique plaiting skill used to produce a variety of products made from rattan. However, the widespread use of plastic products and the depletion of wild rattan (due to unsustainable harvesting practices) are leading to fewer Co Tu people maintaining this artisan skill and putting the plaiting tradition at risk. In September 2019, the USAID Green Annamites Project partnered with the Vietnam Handicraft Exporter Association (VietCraft) to improve the sustainable livelihoods of Co Tu communities by enhancing the rattan and medicinal plant value chains in Quang Nam province, benefiting 450 households in 10 communes.

The workshop focused on reviewing specialized inspection policies and management of import-export goods, identifying overlapping policies, and reviewing the list of goods under specialized inspections (approximately 10,000 items).

TG persons bear a disproportionate burden of HIV infection as stigma, discrimination, and lack of legal protection remain major barriers for TG persons to access the health services they need. To address this, USAID’s Healthy Markets project has been working closely with the Vietnam Administration for HIV/AIDS Control to develop national TG guidelines that focus on offering gender-affirming healthcare and other HIV/AIDS related services by integrating evidence-based content, leveraging technical inputs from TG health care leaders in Thailand, and facilitating TG community leadership and input in the design process. Gender-affirming healthcare refers to counseling, care and procedures that help align a person's body with their gender identity, including hormone therapy and chest reconstruction surgery.
