April 11, 2019

On April 3, USAID and MOIT organized a workshop for 35 people (27 male and eight female) to present energy benchmarking results and proposed minimum performance standards for the sugar processing sector in Vietnam. Participants discussed opportunities and challenges in using sugar factory waste to generate energy; key results from USAID's initial study on Energy Efficiency Benchmarking in the Vietnam Sugar Sector; and the draft circular on Minimum Energy Performance Standards (MEPS) and how it will be implemented. The MEPS will set a standard that the sugar production sector will need to achieve.

With support from USAID’s Healthy Markets activity, on March 27, Dong Nai province made PrEP available for the first time to key populations affected by HIV. Dong Nai is a major industrial center in Vietnam and is among the 11 provinces that have been selected to offer PrEP services to most at-risk populations by 2020, with support from the PEPFAR program.

USAID's Vietnam Local Works for Environmental Health activity is increasing local capacity and building partnerships between local organizations to practically and sustainably address environmental health challenges. The activity addresses water pollution issues in Thanh Hoa and Ha Nam provinces, with best practices to be replicated and scaled up in other locations.

During a landmark event Tuesday at the United States Institute of Peace (USIP) entitled,“Overcoming War Legacies: The Road to Reconciliation and Future Cooperation Between the United States and Vietnam,” USAID Deputy Administrator Bonnie Glick announced the official launch of the design phase of the environmental clean-up of Vietnam’s Bien Hoa Airbase -- the largest remaining dioxin hotspot in Vietnam. Dioxin is a toxic chemical in Agent Orange, an herbicide mixture used by the U.S. military during the Vietnam War to clear foliage.

Apart from the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs (MOLISA) continues to be an important rehabilitation service provider in Vietnam. MOLISA currently manages nearly 800 centers that provide various types of rehabilitation services to persons with disabilities. On March 21-22, USAID helped organize the 2019 Annual Social Welfare Conference, where MOLISA and its branches mapped out their plan for providing rehabilitation services from 2020 to 2030, in accordance with World Health Organization guidelines.
