January 14, 2021, Tashkent, Uzbekistan – New standards of educational achievement by grade and subject are being launched by the Ministry of Public Education in partnership with the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID).  Having clear expectations for each school grade about what students are expected to know and do will then enable the Ministry to develop the appropriate curriculum, textbooks, and teacher guides that teach the required skills.  These are one of the foundational elements of building a quality education system that can produce graduates with the critical thinking, problem solving, and practical skills that are needed for them to be successful in Uzbekistan’s economy.

Today, Charge d'affaires (CDA) Alan Meltzer delivered opening remarks at an event organized by USAID’s Judicial Reform in Uzbekistan Program marking the internationally recognized 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Based Violence (GBV) campaign. Women's Committee Chair/Deputy Prime Minister Elmira Bositkhanova, Senate Chair Tanzila Narbaeva, Development Strategy Center (DSC) Director Eldor Tulyakov joined CDA Meltzer in recognizing the role the U.S. government and the Government of Uzbekistan have taken to promote gender equality in Uzbekistan at the event.

 Early Grade Reading

Today, U.S. Ambassador Daniel Rosenblum and Minister of Public Education Sherzod Shermatov visited School #238 in Tashkent to launch an Early Grade Reading (EGRA) and Early Grade Math Assessments (EGMA) pilot in Uzbekistan. One of the key partnerships between USAID and the Government of Uzbekistan is focused on promoting quality education for Uzbekistani children. The collaboration between Uzbekistan’s Ministry of Public Education (MPE) and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) aims to advance early grade reading and math for Uzbekistan’s school children.

USAID Hosts the Ninth Annual Central Asia Trade Forum in Shymkent, Kazakhstan

The Central Asia Trade Forum, the region’s flagship international event for companies and exporters, opened today in Shymkent, Kazakhstan. Over 500 leaders from government, business and civil society from Central and South Asia, Europe, and the United States gathered to explore investment and innovation in horticulture across the region.

Early Grade Reading Assessment (EGRA)

A team of five U.S. education experts have arrived in Uzbekistan to work with education experts from Uzbekistan’s Ministry of Public Education (MOPE) to develop reading and mathematics assessments for students in grades 2 and 4. The data from this assessment, which is supported by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), will be used to conduct a national-level survey of how well students are developing foundational skills in primary school. The survey results will provide Uzbekistan a comprehensive set of data on student outcomes that will inform strategies to improve teaching and learning so that all students have the opportunity to succeed.
