U.S. Ambassador to Tajikistan Elisabeth Millard, First Deputy Minister of Health and Social Services Ms. Umarzoda Saida, and Mercy Corps Country Director Garrett Hubbard welcomed government officials, donor representatives, and other stakeholders to a ceremony to celebrate the completion of the eight-year Maternal and Child Health Project funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).
U.S. Ambassador Elisabeth Millard attended a launch ceremony for the new $9.7 million Feed the Future Tajikistan Land Market Development Activity Project. The ceremony was also attended by key stakeholders and other counterparts who make significant contributions to promote land use rights, including Rajabboy Ahmadzoda, Chairman of State Committee for Land Management and Geodesy of the Republic of Tajikistan, as well as representatives from Parliament and the Government of the Republic of Tajikistan, and the U.S. Embassy. The project will continue through August 2020.
Acting Deputy Chief of Mission of the United States to Tajikistan Lucy Jilka joined the First Deputy Minister of Health and Social Protection of Population of the Republic of Tajikistan Umarzoda Saida Gayrat, national health leadership, physicians, TB doctors, and stakeholders to celebrate the introduction of bedaquiline to Tajikistan. This is the first new drug approved for the treatment of tuberculosis (TB) since the 1960s. U.S. company Janssen Pharmaceuticals, a subsidiary of Johnson & Johnson, created bedaquiline to treat drug-resistant tuberculosis and protect public health. Janssen is donating 30,000 courses of this life-saving new TB drug to qualified countries. The United States, through USAID’s Office of Global Health, is partnering with Janssen to introduce bedaquiline in Tajikistan.
U.S. Ambassador Elisabeth Millard joined Deputy Minister of Education and Science of the Republic of Tajikistan Latofat Naziri, local education officials, teachers, and education stakeholders at the joint Ministry and USAID Quality Reading Project presentation of the 2016 Early Grade Reading Assessment midterm findings. The baseline data was presented in December 2014.
