This is the second notice of funding opportunity released by IDEA and is in addition to the APS funding opportunity released last week. Increased Demand and Engagement for Accountability (IDEA) is a USAID funded initiative in support of civil society organizations in Sri Lanka. It is implemented by Management Systems International Inc (MSI).
U.S. Ambassador to Sri Lanka and Maldives Atul Keshap, U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) Sri Lanka Mission Director Reed Aeschliman, and Dr. Michael Ernst from USAID’s Office of Foreign Disaster Assistance (OFDA) met with Minister of Irrigation and Water Resources Management and Disaster Management Duminda Dissanayake to discuss Sri Lanka’s preparedness ahead of the monsoon season. Topics also included past and ongoing U.S. financial and technical assistance for disaster preparedness, management, and recovery.
This APS aims to support civil society to be more effective in advancing democratic values of citizen participation, government accountability, and rights protection at local and national levels. Through this APS, IDEA seeks to support civil society efforts that will advance reforms through collaborative approaches that integrate women, youth and other marginalized communities in the areas of a) good governance b) rights protection / rule of law and c) improving the status of women.
This is an overview of some of the most significant milestones the American people have supported through USAID in Sri Lanka, during the first quarter of 2018. We hope that these demonstrate the diversity and the scope of USAID-supported activities in Sri Lanka and recognize stakeholder efforts that made all this possible.
Sixty-seven year old J.A. Padmalatha, in Yathdehiwatta happily climbs the mountain every morning to check the level of chlorine in the water treatment unit to ensure that the water is safe for the villagers to consume. Before USAID support provided them with a water tank and a chlorination unit, the water they drank had high bacteria content. Thanks to people like Padmalatha, the village can now manage the purification of their own water.
