Good morning, Rowena. Thank you very much for inviting me. I’m thrilled to be here speaking with you this morning, and I’m thrilled to be in South Africa. It’s a new region for me but I am proud of the important work we are doing here and proud of the very strong relationship that USAID has with South Africans, whether it’s the government, the private sector or just ordinary people.
The U.S. Agency for International Development’s (USAID) U.S. Global Development Lab is announcing $5 million for 25 new research partnerships to address critical areas of development. Through the Partnerships for Enhanced Engagement in Research (PEER) program, the Global Development Lab will award $5 million to high quality research projects across the world. Funded research projects address s global development challenges in partnership with a USG supported scientist .
Switching to clean energy takes preparation, but the results can bring jobs and other benefits to communities and reduce harmful air pollution.
USAID’s Southern Africa Trade and Investment Hub aims to increase global competitiveness and intra-regional trade, and improve food security in Southern Africa. The project is implementing activities with the public and private sectors and civil society across the region.
USAID joined the Deputy President of South Africa, Mr. Cyril Ramaphosa; the National Minister of Health, Dr. Aaron Motsoaledi; and the South African National Aids Council (SANAC) as they launched South Africa’s five-year National Strategic Plan on HIV, TB and STIs, Friday, March 31. The event was also attended by representatives of the international and donor communities including UNAIDS Executive Director, Michel Sidibe, and the Chargé d'Affaires of the U.S. Embassy in South Africa, Ms. Jessye Lapenn.
