Nal’ibali, the national reading-for-enjoyment campaign, has partnered with United States Agency for International Development (USAID) to bring the campaign’s proven approach to literacy development to selected rural schools in the Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal provinces. Focussing on nurturing a love of reading for joy in English and home languages to spark children’s potential and unlock their school learning, the schools’ initiative, titled: ‘Story Powered Schools: A South African Reading Revolution’, is launching with the new school year this January.

USAID’s support for breastfeeding is longstanding, going back to the 1970’s, when USAID raised concern over a decline in breastfeeding.  We are proud that our “Breastfeeding for Child Survival Strategy” was launched all the way back in 1990, establishing breastfeeding as a critical component of our programs.

After 11 years in the making, Friday marked the day of the official launch of the Nelson Mandela Children’s Hospital. This hospital is located in Parktown, Johannesburg and is a unique hospital in that it is dedicated completely to pediatrics serving both the public and private health care systems in South Africa.
