Statement by Acting Administrator John Barsa

Today, the United States announced nearly $200 million in additional humanitarian assistance provided in Fiscal Year (FY) 2020 for Rohingya refugees and host communities in the People’s Republic of Bangladesh and other countries in the region, as well as for internally displaced Rohingya and other crisis-affected communities in Burma, including those who fled ethnic cleansing in Rakhine State since August 2017.

Today, the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) and the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) announced $2 million for five new awards under the BetterTogether/JuntosEsMejor Challenge to benefit Venezuelans in the Argentine Republic, the Federative Republic of Brazil, the Republics of Colombia and Chile, and the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela.

Today, we celebrate World Food Day-a moment to pause and recognize the ongoing need for action towards ending global poverty, hunger and malnutrition. Just last week, the Nobel Committee recognized the importance of fighting hunger in efforts to build peace. Against the backdrop of a pandemic that threatens to increase global poverty, hunger and malnutrition substantially, the message of this year's World Food Day feels more poignant and urgent than others in recent memory.

The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) and the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) are pleased to announce the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on coordination around fifth-generation (5G) broadband Internet and training in information and communications technology (ICT). USAID Deputy Administrator Bonnie Glick and FCC Chairman Ajit Pai signed the MoU, which will further the goals and objectives of the USAID Digital Strategy and the FCC's 5G FAST Plan, consistent with the National Strategy to Secure 5G.

This well-deserved honor recognizes the WFP's tireless work around the globe to feed those made vulnerable to hunger by conflict and crises.

The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) has launched a new program to counter disinformation in the Caucasus. The Georgia Information Integrity Program is a five-year, $7.5 million award, implemented by a consortium of Georgian and international organizations managed by Zinc Network, Limited.  Designed to help Georgians build societal resilience against disinformation, the program will play a significant role in the implementation of USAID's  Development Framework for Countering Malign Kremlin Influence(CMKI) and marks the Agency's first long-term, stand-alone program devoted exclusively to addressing the threat of disinformation.

Today, the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) announced 16 new awards through its Development Innovation Ventures (DIV) to test and scale breakthrough solutions to the world's most intractable development challenges. The successful organizations, many of which are new to working with USAID, span six sectors and nine countries.

The United States, through USAID, is investing an additional $22.8 million into its 5-year $113 million agreement with the Egypt Ministry of International Cooperation to improve the investment environment and empower women to join in the labor force.

Today the United States, through the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), and the Arab Republic of Egypt, through the Ministry of International Cooperation, signed an addendum to their five-year bilateral assistance agreement for Inclusive Economic Governance that provides an additional $22.8 million in funding. In line with Egypt's Vision 2030, this new commitment is intended to improve the investment environment and empower women to join the labor force in Egypt.
