The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) has announced its annual list of high-priority countries for assistance in safe water, sanitation, and hygiene and the launch of corresponding country plans for each. Aligned with the requirements in the Water for the World Act of 2014, these partner countries will be the primary focus of the U.S. Government’s investments to build a more water-secure world.

Today, we celebrate the 59th anniversary of the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID). Since the Agency’s inception, USAID has been proud to exhibit the best of American values abroad, by helping people around the world make progress on their Journey to Self-Reliance while creating a safer and more prosperous world for Americans at home. Since our founding in 1961, USAID has promoted social and economic development with the ultimate goal of ending the need for foreign assistance.

Today, on this International Day to End Impunity for Crimes Against Journalists, we salute all journalists, especially those who risk their safety and their very lives to inform citizens with accurate reporting. Factual, accurate reporting should never put anyone’s life in danger.

As the United Nations (UN) focuses on celebrating its legacy over the last 75 years, including as a champion of women for more than a quarter century, I write to reiterate the U.S. Government’s call for “the [UN to] promote and fulfill an agenda that encourages meaningful contributions for women and their communities, and that has a positive and lasting impact for generations to come.” I also want once again to raise concerns with the disconcerting trend that the UN supports and champions abortion, especially under the guise of the term “sexual and reproductive health.”

Produced by the Cuban Observatory of Human Rights, and the International Republican Institute, the quarterly report presents survey results on how Cubans perceive their access to water, food, health care, employment, housing, and other critical basic social services.

Today, while in the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, Secretary of State Michael R. Pompeo announced the United States is providing an additional $2 million in humanitarian assistance to respond to Typhoon Molave and the ongoing severe flooding that has affected Central Vietnam since early October. This amount brings the total humanitarian assistance from the U.S. Government for people touched by the floods to $2.1 million.

Today, we celebrate one of the most groundbreaking inventions in human history. On October 29, 1969, researchers at the University of California, Los Angeles, and Stanford University first connected over a long-distance computer network. The teams only sent two letters before the receiving computer crashed, but those first bits of data marked the first Internet transmission in history.

Today, at the U.S. Government’s third annual Indo-Pacific Business Forum hosted virtually out of Hanoi, Vietnam, U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) Deputy Administrator Bonnie Glick announced a new Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with a consortium of U.S. retail, apparel, and footwear companies and industry associations to pursue much-needed relief to the predominantly female workers in their supply-chains in the People’s Republic of Bangladesh, the Kingdom of Cambodia, the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka, and the Socialist Republic of Vietnam. Deputy Administrator Glick signed the MOU on behalf of USAID, and Steve Lamar, President and Chief Executive Officer of the American Apparel and Footwear Association,signed it on behalf of the consortium.

Today, at the Indo-Pacific Business Forum hosted virtually out of Hanoi, Vietnam, U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) Acting Assistant Administrator for Asia Javier Piedra announced new activities valued at more than $28 million to advance regional energy markets in South Asia. The assistance advances the U.S. Government’s Asia EDGE (Enhancing Development and Growth through Energy) initiative, which works to strengthen energy security and expand access to energy across the Indo-Pacific region.

On October 25, United States Agency for International Development (USAID) Deputy Administrator Bonnie Glick participated in meetings with officials of the Government of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to discuss expanding U.S. and Emirati development and humanitarian assistance cooperation. In other meetings led by U.S. Under Secretary of State for Economic Growth, Energy, and the Environment Keith Krach, the U.S. and Emirati delegations discussed the countries’ economic relationship and the necessity to use trusted providers for digital infrastructure.

The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) has released eight Requests For Information (RFIs) for the Next Generation Global Health Supply-Chain suite of programs (NextGen). Under NextGen, USAID expects to issue multiple contracts, with a total funding envelope of approximately $16 billion over a period of ten years, subject to the availability of appropriations.

Our work around the world has made it clear that countries that protect religious freedom tend to enjoy stronger economies, greater political stability, and more peaceful relations with their neighbors.

Today, the day after the Republic of Sudan joined the historic Abraham Accords brokered by President Trump and made peace with the State of Israel, the United States announced $81 million in humanitarian assistance for the people of Sudan as they confront ongoing severe challenges related to a deteriorating economy, the global pandemic, and the worst floods in more than a century.
