The Ministry of Education (MoE) employs 70 percent of all civil service employees in Afghanistan, the largest of the Afghan government. However, due to a lack of transparent and modern systems, many of the employees rely on high-risk cash transfers to receive their salaries.
The Afghan Ministry of Mines and Petroleum’s Jabal Seraj cement project aims to build a new cement plant in the country and reduce Afghanistan’s dependence on imports from Iran and Pakistan. The cement plant would supply a critical input to construction and other industries, while generating needed jobs and tax revenues.
Fatema Alizada is a small milk producer in Aliabad village near Mazar-e-Sharif, the capital city of northern Balkh province. She was not always able to sell all of the milk she produced on the local market and this meant her income was not stable.
Using social media as a platform to grow and maintain personal networks is changing how Afghanistan’s youth find employment and advance their careers. A 2018 assessment conducted by The Asia Foundation found that almost 80% of Afghans who use the internet are on Facebook, which offers opportunities for youth, especially for women, to network with one another.
As Afghanistan moves towards implementing the Access to Information Law, there is growing awareness among investigative journalists that they need to improve their own understanding of the law and how they can use it.
