The U.S. government, through the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID)’s Clean Cities, Blue Ocean (CCBO) program, has awarded grants worth nearly Php42 million ($890,000) to five organizations in support of local solutions that address ocean plastics pollution.

A staggering 2.7 million tons of plastic are generated in the Philippines each year, 20 percent of which is estimated to end up in the ocean, according to a 2015 McKinsey and Company study. Through these grants, USAID will partner with local and international organizations to test new models to increase recycling rates, reduce landfill waste and leakage into nearby waters, and improve community livelihoods to help build sustainable waste systems.

“The United States is a committed ally and partner of the Filipino people in protecting the country's rich marine ecosystems and resources for the benefit of present and future generations,” said U.S. Embassy Chargé d’Affaires John Law.

The first wave of grants will pilot solutions to stop the flow of plastic pollution to the waters within and surrounding the Philippines. Program grantees are:

The United States, through the Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA) and in coordination with the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), is distributing Php14.8 million ($300,000) worth of regionally-manufactured personal protective equipment (PPE) to the Philippine General Hospital (PGH) and COVID-19 treatment centers across the Philippines. This latest donation brings overall U.S. government assistance to the Philippines’ COVID-19 response efforts to nearly Php981 million ($19.8 million).

U.S. Provides PHP126 Million to Support Filipino Children’s  Education During Pandemic

The U.S. government, through the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), is providing Php126 million ($2.5 million) to help the Philippine government’s implementation of the Basic Education-Learning Continuity Plan to advance education delivery during the COVID-19 pandemic. Since the COVID-19 emergency began, USAID and the Philippine Department of Education (DepEd) have collaborated to ensure teachers continue to teach and children still learn while schools are closed. USAID’s Php1.9 billion ($38.5 million) basic education project, ABC+: Advancing Basic Education in the Philippines, organized and facilitated consultations among education partners to identify and quickly roll-out innovative teaching and learning platforms.

U.S. Government Announces New Mindanao-Focused COVID-19 Assistance

The U.S. Embassy in the Philippines announced today that the U.S. government is providing an additional Php201 million ($4 million) to help support vulnerable populations in Mindanao in the fight against COVID-19, bringing the total amount of U.S. pandemic assistance to the Philippines to over Php978 million ($19.5 million).
