Peter Trenchard was sworn in as the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) Mission Director for Senegal on July 31, 2019. Mr. Trenchard manages USAID’s programs and works with the Government of Senegal and other partners to accelerate Senegal’s transition towards established lower middle-income status.
Mr. Trenchard brings to the position more than 35 years of experience across sub-Saharan Africa, eleven of which were in Senegal. His most recent assignment prior to joining USAID/Senegal was at USAID’s Malawi mission, where he served as Deputy Mission Director from August 2015 to July 2019. Before that, he managed economic growth programs at USAID in Senegal and Ghana and was involved in implementing several key initiatives such as Feed the Future, Partnership for Growth, Power Africa, Trade Africa, and the G7 New Alliance for Food Security and Nutrition. His work in sub-Saharan Africa has largely focused on agriculture, natural resource management, local governance, trade and private sector development, and has taken him to the Central African Republic, Burundi, Uganda, Madagascar, and Botswana.
Mr. Trenchard has a Master of Science degree in forest economics from the University of Florida and is fluent in French and Sango. He has two children and is married to Josephine Trenchard, East Africa Director for the organization FHI360.
