Recurrent natural disasters and severe poverty contribute to food insecurity in Mali, while civil conflict since 2012 has exacerbated food insecurity and spurred population displacement. In 2018, an estimated 4.6 million people are food insecure and 1.1 million people are affected by or at risk of malnutrition, according to the UN. As of September, the government of Mali and the UN also report approximately 77,000 internally displaced persons within Mali and 140,000 Malian refugees in Burkina Faso, Mauritania and Niger.
On June 21, 2018, the U.S. government through the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and the Malian government reinforced their long-standing partnership in the health sector with the launch of the “One Health Platform,” which will address diseases of pandemic potential in Mali.
On Wednesday, the United States Ambassador to Mali, Paul Folmsbee, administered the oath of office for Scott G. Dobberstein, officially swearing him in as the new Mission Director for the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) in Mali.
Against incredible odds, Mali passed new legislation guaranteeing more seats for women at the political table. In November 2015, the Malian Parliament adopted a gender quota bill that will reserve onethird of government jobs for women, including in elected offices
The Mali Sub-National Governance Project (SNGP) will work with the national and sub-national governments and civil society to capitalize on renewed efforts to decentralize authority and resources in Mali - key to implementing the Algiers Peace Accord - to give more resources and authority directly to the regional governments.
