As part of its malaria prevention efforts, USAID supports the distribution of bed nets to pregnant women and children through primary health care facilities.

Malaria is the leading cause of disease and death in Mali. USAID activities support the goal of the President’s Malaria Initiative (PMI) to reduce malaria-related mortality by 70 percent by the end of 2015.

USAID marked its fifth consecutive year of implementing PMI activities in Mali in 2013, achieving important results:

• Distributed 800,000 long lasting insecticide-treated bed nets, to help prevent malaria
• Achieved  85 percent insecticide-treated bed net ownership, and 70 percent use in Mali
• Procured 2,289,720 anti-malarial treatments for health facilities and community health workers.
