The Beyond the Grid (BTG) Activity works to strengthen the capacity of the Rural and Renewable Energy Agency (RREA) to fulfill its mandate to promote rural electrification, which includes planning, designing, evaluating, implementing and overseeing rural electrification projects in Liberia. In addition, BTG is providing oversight and commissioning support to the Mission’s three pilot renewable energy projects and one grid extension project, designed to increase access to clean and affordable modern energy services in targeted rural areas.

 Current Activities

  • Strengthening RREA institutional capacity through staff support and training
  • Transaction and project implementation support to operate amd manage energy service systems
  • Promotion of productive uses of energy in targeted rural communities.
  • Construction supervision services for pilot renewable energy projects and rural grid extension projec

Accomplishment to Date:

  • Completed and commissioned three pilot renewable energy (solar, biomass, biofuel) projects connecting 564 households (2,820 individual beneficiaries) to energy services, in Lofa and Nimba Counties.
  • Trained three rural cooperatives as energy service providers and 15 individuals in energy service provision
  • Completed five-year business investment plan and five operational standards to support RREA efforts to increase energy access using renewable technologies
  • Completed solar-diesel hybrid mini-grid system reaching 400 households in Totota, Bong County and managed by community using prepaid meters
  • Completed oversight on the construction of 30 km distribution network system connecting 2,200 households in Bong County, including Phebe Hospital, Cuttington University and Central Agriculture Research Institute.
