SCHOLARSHIPS

Participatory democracy values—such as personal responsibility, accountability, entrepreneurship, and public action—have yet to be fully absorbed and practiced by Kosovo society.  To address this need, the program has awarded 185 full scholarships for U.S.-based Master’s degree programs, as well as 107 scholarships for professional certificates over the course of the program’s five-year duration.  Supported areas of study include: Rule of Law, Engineering, Public Administration, Agriculture, Business Management, Finance, Economics, Information Systems, Education, and Gender and Interdisciplinary Studies.  Through these scholarships, future leaders will be developed in critical areas that support diplomatic and assistance priorities identified by the Kosovo and U.S. governments.

UNIVERSITY PARTNERSHIPS

USAID works with the University of Prishtina – the largest public university in Kosovo – to enhance its overall management, financial viability and sustainability, improve teaching methodologies, strengthen institutional support for research, and improve career orientation services for graduates and alumni.  This is accomplished in part through partnerships and academic exchanges with American universities that improve teaching, research, curriculum, and course development at the University in key development areas: engineering, education, agriculture, and economics.

KEY RESULTS  

  • 185 Master Degree scholarships awarded 
  • 107 Professional Certificate scholarships awarded.
  • 4 University Partnerships established between University of Prishtina, and Arizona State University, Indiana University, the University of Minnesota, and Dartmouth College in the United States.
  • Center for Research and Sponsored Projects established at UP, an administrative office that will support an increase in both the quality and volume of research projects and external funding at the university.
  • Improved Career Development Center database developed to better connect students and graduates with internships, jobs, and networking resources. 

The program is implemented in partnership with the Government of Kosovo’s Ministry of Education, Science and Technology.
