Jordan faces serious economic and social challenges, including fiscal and trade imbalances, resource constraints, unemployment, and demographic pressures. All of these are aggravated by the more than one million refugees and asylum seekers in the country. This program will help Jordanian systems and institutions to achieve sustainable progress by leveraging existing capabilities and resources.
The USAID Civic Initiatives Support Program (USAID CIS) aims at cultivating a strong and vibrant civil society in Jordan through supporting a broad range of civic initiatives. Working at both national and local levels, it supports civic initiatives and advocacy responding to common interests; strengthens the organizational capacity of civil society organizations; and promotes Government of Jordan-civil society collaboration efforts to address reform and development challenges.
Since 2005, the International Republican Institute’s (IRI) program in Jordan has focused on connecting citizens and government by promoting democratic governance and strong political parties. IRI grassroots-focused activities encourage democratic participation on the national and local levels by engaging civil society, particularly women and youth, and preparing political parties and candidates for elections.
USAID Community Engagement Project (CEP) builds the capacity of community members, municipalities, and NGOs to identify and alleviate stressors affecting the population in order to leave behind stronger, more cohesive and resilient partner communities.
Jordan and the United States benefit from a long-standing partnership – the value of which is measured in Jordan’s strong leadership role in the region, its strength as a moderate and stable ally in a tumultuous region, and in cooperation on numerous fronts, including the Middle East peace process and counter-terrorism, peacekeeping, and humanitarian efforts.
