I am pleased to announce that the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) has received clearance from Congress to proceed with creating four new Bureaus as a part of USAID's Transformation process: the Bureau for Humanitarian Assistance, the Bureau for Conflict-Prevention and Stabilization, the Bureau for Resilience and Food Security, and the new Bureau for Asia.
United States Agency for International Development (USAID) Administrator Mark Green traveled to the Republic of Sénégal March 31- April 2 to lead the U.S. Presidential Delegation to the Inauguration of His Excellency Macky Sall to a second term as President.
Today, the United States is pre-positioning humanitarian relief supplies in Curaçao, a constituent country of the Kingdom of The Netherlands, to help people affected by the political and economic crisis in Venezuela.
U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) Deputy Administrator Bonnie Glick will travel to Kenya, Rwanda, and Ethiopia April 2-13. In Kenya, the Deputy Administrator will meet with implementing partners and government representatives, and will visit USAID project sites on health, economic growth, and agriculture. In Rwanda, she will attend Kwibuka25 activities on behalf of the U.S. government to demonstrate our solidarity with the people of Rwanda. In Ethiopia, the Deputy Administrator will meet with government officials, visit USAID relief and development assistance sites, and engage with U.S. government staff.
On March 28, U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) Deputy Administrator Bonnie Glick met with the Ecuadorian Minister of Environment, Marcelo Mata. They discussed USAID's commitment to supporting Ecuador's development priorities and intentions to sign a Memorandum of Understanding that expresses both governments' shared support for environmental programs. During the meeting, Minister Mata also highlighted the importance of increased cooperation to address marine plastic pollution.
U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) Assistant Administrator for the Bureau of Europe and Eurasia Brock Bierman will travel to Chicago, Illinois on April 2-4.
The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) Assistant to the Administrator for the Bureau for Food Security and Deputy Coordinator for Development for Feed the Future Beth Dunford, and USAID Director of the Office of Food for Peace Trey Hicks will travel to Brussels, Belgium April 2 - 3 to participate in the "Food and Agriculture in Times of Crisis" high-level event hosted by the Global Network against Food Crises.
U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) Administrator Mark Green traveled to the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan March 26 to 30, where he reaffirmed the longstanding partnership between the United States and one of our closest allies. The Administrator met with His Royal Highness Prince Faisal Bin Al Hussein, the Regent; Her Majesty Queen Rania Al Abdullah; His Royal Highness Prince El-Hassan Bin Talal; and Prime Minister Omar Razzaz. Administrator Green also expressed his sincere condolences as four Jordanians lost their lives in the terrorist attack in New Zealand.

I think you have not only been a great role model and inspirational leader for young people here in Jordan, but throughout the region, and indeed all around the world. We have truly appreciated the partnership between our two countries. I often say that the purpose of our foreign assistance must be ending its need to exist, and so our goal is to help you lead your future, and to help provide tools for your young people to help lead your bright future.
USAID Administrator Mark Green finished a productive four-day visit to Egypt. He visited USAID investments and met with senior officials from the Egyptian government, including Prime Minister Moustafa Madbouly and Minister of Investment and International Cooperation Sahar Nasr to strengthen a strategic partnership that has extended over four decades. In commemoration of the 40th anniversary of USAID's bilateral assistance agreement with Egypt, the Administrator recognized the strength of a collaborative relationship that has improved the lives and livelihoods of millions of Egyptians.
U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) Acting Assistant Administrator for the Bureau for Latin America and Caribbean Steve Olive will travel to Mexico City and Chihuahua City, Mexico March 26-30. During his visit, Acting Assistant Administrator Olive will meet with government officials, private sector representatives, and civil society organizations to discuss citizen security, human rights, the rule of law, and anti-corruption efforts. Olive will also visit local community members, including USAID beneficiaries, to discuss the challenges facing at-risk youth and their families.
Today, U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) Administrator Mark Green announced a $90 million investment in three leading universities in Egypt, which will form partnerships with American universities to create Centers of Excellence in energy, water, and agriculture.
The three Centers of Excellence will establish linkages between Egyptian universities and leading counterparts in the United States, help forge relationships between Egyptian and American researchers and experts, and drive research and innovation in sectors that are key to Egypt's future economic growth.
The United States announced more than $61 million in additional humanitarian assistance to meet the needs of vulnerable communities, displaced persons, and returning refugees across Afghanistan, as well as Afghan refugees in the region.
We are here today to launch a bold new U.S-Egypt collaborative initiative: the creation of three academic Centers of Excellence that will focus on cutting-edge research in agriculture, energy, and water. And we know that these three areas in particular, are irreplaceable if we're going to build together that brighter future.
In America, Centers of Excellence across the country have long connected scientists and researchers from complementary academic fields and different institutions, breaking down walls, allowing them to exchange ideas and to tackle challenges together. The collaboration that these centers have facilitated is responsible for some of the most significant breakthroughs and scientific achievements in recent history.
On March 22, 2019, officials from the Governments of Laos and the United States celebrated the successful completion of the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) LUNA II project at a ceremony at the Lao Plaza Hotel in Vientiane. The event, co-chaired by Minister of Industry and Commerce Khemmani Pholsena, and U.S. Ambassador Rena Bitter, highlighted USAID LUNA II’s achievements over the project’s five years of implementation. More than 40 representatives from the Lao government, U.S. Embassy, and private sector attended the celebration.
Today the United States, through the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), announced nearly $3.4 million in additional emergency humanitarian food assistance to meet the urgent needs caused by Cyclone Idai and the related flooding in the Republic of Mozambique. This donation brings the total U.S. investment in this humanitarian response in southern Africa to nearly $4.1 million.
Today, U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) Administrator Mark Green announced the establishment of the Egypt Rural Business Strengthening project. The initiative will invest $37 million, including funds for Feed the Future, to build resilience in Egypt's agricultural sector, which will advance food security, prosperity, and ultimately self-reliance for Egyptians.
Over the past 25 years, USAID has provided more than $100 million to preserve, restore, and protect cultural heritage sites throughout Egypt. That funding has supported the development of large-scale engineering systems, like this one, at some of the country's most prominent historical sites: the Sphinx in Giza; Karnak Temple in Luxor; and the Catacombs in Alexandria. These investments in preserving the past, we all know, are, also, investments in Egypt's future.
The tourism industry is an important driver of economic growth, job creation, and development here in Egypt. Every year, millions of tourists travel here to experience the country's vibrant culture. And we know that number will only increase. That's why USAID also supports restoration and conservation training programs that give Egyptians the skills, and experience, and knowledge to better manage, and grow, the tourism sector.
President Donald J. Trump announced yesterday the designation of a Presidential Delegation to attend the Inauguration of His Excellency Macky Sall, President of the Republic of Senegal, on April 2, 2019, in Dakar, Senegal.
As the USAID Administrator, I believe that the purpose of our assistance must be ending its need to exist. And what I mean by that is, we believe in the desire of every person, every community, and every country to craft and lead its own bright future. We also believe that where there are countries and leaders who are willing to make investments and to take on challenges, then we as Americans must walk with you along the way in that journey.
At USAID, helping our partners to improve agricultural productivity is one of our very highest priorities because we know that advancing food security is an essential way to get to prosperity and to self-reliance. And because of this, USAID has long worked with the people and the Government of Egypt to help grow this agricultural sector.
