In 2011, in collaboration with the Ministry of Education and Technical Education, USAID supported the establishment of a Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) high school for boys (grades 10-12) in Giza, followed by the Maadi STEM high school for girls in 2012. Building on the success of these schools, USAID helped establish 12 additional STEM schools in Alexandria, Assiut, Dakahlia, Gharbia, Ismailia, Kafr El Sheikh, Luxor, Menoufia, Qalyoubia, Qena, Red Sea, and Sharqia governorates.

This government-to-government activity focuses on early grade learning in support of the implementation of the Egyptian Ministry of Education’s reform agenda. It builds on previous USAID programming to ensure that Egyptian students are able to learn the fundamental core skills of reading, comprehension, writing, mathematics, and English language by grade 3, at the end of their early primary school experience. This activity also provides remedial learning for students in grades 4-9 who have difficulties reading at their grade level.

Literate Village is a four-year activity that focuses on 2,150 economically disadvantaged villages in the Sohag, Beheira, and Assiut governorates with high rates of illiteracy among mothers and low school attendance rates among children. Using an intergenerational approach to learning to eradicate illiteracy, this activity strengthens literacy among children in community schools and improves early grade reading instruction, particularly for remedial readers.

Through the Center of Excellence for Water, USAID, in cooperation with the Egyptian Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, will help build the capacity and sustainability of water research and innovation at Alexandria University and other partner universities in Egypt. It will also create linkages between academic researchers and the public and private sectors to encourage practical, timely research.

Through the establishment of the Center of Excellence for Energy, USAID, in cooperation with the Egyptian Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, will help Ain Shams University to produce high quality applied research in energy, deliver world-class training in engineering, and create a dynamic energy innovation ecosystem focused on meeting local challenges and contributing to economic growth.
