USAID’s contribution of $16.8 million to the International Organization for Migration’s (IOM) Return and Reintegration in the Northern Triangle Program assists in providing services to help returning migrants reintegrate into local communities, and to alert the public on the risks of irregular migration. Through this contribution, IOM provides technical assistance and support to the Northern Triangle countries of El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras to provide returnees with appropriate assistance and to improve services for the protection of returning migrants including vulnerable populations, such as unaccompanied children (UAC) and families.
Services include psychosocial support, school reintegration for children and humanitarian aid. The project also helps strengthen the capacity of institutions and local governments for service provision and provides assistance to upgrade infrastructure.
IOM’s Return and Reintegration Program has four objectives:
- Supporting national authorities towards improved/expanded capacity of in-processing and care of returning migrants.
- Expanding the range of Northern Triangle government-supported opportunities for returning migrants, while contributing to the provision of high-quality services during the reintegration process at the local level.
- Contributing to enhanced institutional government capacities to address root causes of irregular UAC emigration, alleviating negative push factors, strengthening prevention measures, and upgrading infrastructure.
- Improving the availability, quality, and use of information to strengthen the reception and reintegration process and to prevent remigration.
