Nur-Sultan, Kazakhstan - Today, U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) Acting Assistant Administrator Javier Piedra met with Kazakhstan International Development Agency (KazAID) Coordinator Rapil Zhoshybaev to strengthen cooperation on development and humanitarian assistance and explore future strategic opportunities for collaboration between the two agencies.

Also in attendance were U.S. Consul General Eric Meyer, USAID Regional Mission Director for Central Asia Christopher Edwards, from the U.S. Mission to Kazakhstan, and Head of Multilateral Economic Cooperation and Official Development Assistance Unit Asset Makhmetov, and Member of the Working Group on the Establishment of KazAID Ainur Tuimebekova, from the Kazakhstan Ministry of Foreign Affairs. 

USAID Announces a New Activity on Tuberculosis Prevention and Care in Prisons in Tajikistan

The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) announced a new five-year, $1 million, activity on Tuberculosis (TB) Prevention and Care in Prisons that will be implemented by the Republican Public Organization, Afif. In cooperation with the Main Directorate for the Execution of Criminal Sentences of the Ministry of Justice of the Republic of Tajikistan and the National Tuberculosis Program of the Ministry of Health and Social Protection of the Population of the Republic of Tajikistan, the activity will provide state-of-the-art TB treatment and care to prisoners and recently released prisoners.

From September 14 to 19, 2020 over 500 media specialists from countries across Central Asia are participating in the second annual Central Asian Media Festival (MediaCAMP Fest) hosted by the USAID-funded Central Asia Media Program. The online media festival includes trainings, lectures, film screenings, facilitation sessions, discussions, and talk shows.

USAID Rehabilitates Yomonjar Canal To Improve Water Management

Today, U.S. Ambassador to Uzbekistan Daniel Rosenblum, together with the Minister of Water Resources, Shavkat Khamraev, opened a virtual event in Tashkent to celebrate the renovation of the Yomonjar irrigation system in Bukhara province. The rehabilitation was funded by the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) through its Smart Waters project, implemented by the Central Asia Regional Environmental Center (CAREC).

The U.S. Government, through the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), has donated 200 ventilators to Uzbekistan to assist its fight against COVID-19. This assistance is just the latest donation by the United States of critical supplies in response to Uzbekistan’s request for international assistance related to the pandemic.

The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) Safe Migration in Central Asia program, the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) in Turkmenistan, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the Office of the Ombudsman of Turkmenistan held an online webinar on eradicating forced labor and human trafficking under Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) Target 8.7. Representatives of the Ministry of Labor and Social Protection, Mejlis of Turkmenistan, Union of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs, Institute of Statehood, Democracy and Law of Turkmenistan, General Prosecutor’s Office, Ministry of Agriculture of Turkmenistan, Ministry of Trade of Turkmenistan, and Trade Union of Turkmenistan attended the event.

USAID Improves HIV Prevention and Treatment in Tajikistan

Today, U.S. Ambassador John Mark Pommersheim participated in an online conference to celebrate the accomplishments of the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) HIV Central Asia Flagship program over the last five years and introduce USAID’s new HIV activity, which aims to help 95 percent of people living with HIV know their status and get 95 percent of those people onto HIV treatment.  These USAID activities support the U.S. President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief and UNAIDS goals.
