DHAKA - United States Agency for International Development (USAID) Mission Director Derrick S. Brown visited the Sylhet region from October 4-6 to observe key USAID activities complementing the Government of Bangladesh’s COVID-19 response efforts. Mission Director Brown also launched USAID’s flagship tuberculosis (TB) activity “Alliance for Combating Tuberculosis in Bangladesh” (ACTB) in Sylhet Division as part of the U.S. government’s commitment to end TB globally.

U.S. Ambassador to Bangladesh Earl Miller, UK Department for International Development (DFID) Senior Governance Adviser Aislin Baker, and Bangladesh Minister of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Anisul Huq jointly launched a new Legal Manual for Civil Society Organizations in Bangladesh to help Bangladeshi civil society organizations carry out their missions more effectively.

Ambassador Earl Miller, accompanied by USAID Mission Director Derrick Brown, traveled to the Sundarbans from January 26-28, 2020, to support the growing partnership between the United States and Bangladesh.  Ahead of World Wetlands Day February 2, his visit to the world’s largest mangrove forest highlighted the importance of conserving the Sundarbans and its wildlife.  Healthy ecosystems and protection from natural disasters are critical to developing a resilient Bangladesh.

As part of U.S. Embassy Dhaka’s bilateral engagement with Bangladesh, the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) Bangladesh Mission Director Derrick S. Brown visited key USAID development programs in the Chattogram Hill Tracts (CHT) this week.  During his visit, he met with residents, local government officials and community leaders to underscore the U.S. government’s commitment, through USAID, to work with the Government of Bangladesh and other development partners to improve economic opportunities and promote conservation of the unique natural resources in the Chattogram Hill Tracts.

United States Partners with Bangladesh to Support Anti-Human Trafficking Investigation Training for Police Officers

The United States, through the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) Bangladesh’s Counter Trafficking in Persons (BC/TIP) program, partnered with the Forensic Training Institute (FTI) of the Bangladesh Police Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to sponsor a five-day anti-trafficking in persons (TIP) investigation skills training.  In collaboration with the FTI, the BC/TIP program developed a training curriculum on best practices for handling and investigating TIP cases and assisting trafficking victims in filing cases against perpetrators.  This training is the third anti-human trafficking investigation course held since August of this year.  Twenty-three police officers from 20 trafficking-prone districts actively participated in the classroom and scenario-based training held at the FTI in Dhaka and conducted by the BC/TIP program, which is funded by USAID and implemented by Winrock International, a U.S. non-governmental organization.

The United States, through USAID, is partnering with the Government of Bangladesh and the Bangladeshi private sector to help diversify Bangladesh’s economy and stimulate new streams of economic growth.  USAID’s Comprehensive Private Sector Assessment (PSA) identified agribusiness (food processing), health care, information and communications technology and outsourcing, light engineering, pharmaceuticals, and tourism as some of the most promising industries beyond the ready-made garments (RMG) sector for private sector engagement and investment.

USAID/Bangladesh  Mission Director Derrick Brown visited USAID development programs in the Jashore-Khulna region from Sept. 18-20, including visits to key agriculture, labor and food assistance programs. The site visits were undertaken in collaboration with WordFish, WFP, Winrock International and World Vision Bangladesh among other implementing partners.

Now in Bangladesh, I am excited by the prospects of advancing USAID’s long-standing and productive relationship with the Government of Bangladesh and all Bangladeshis to achieve the impressive goal of graduating to a middle income country in the near future. Although Bangladesh is well on its way, there remains much to be done to ensure this positive trajectory continues.  We must all work together to strengthen systems and remove barriers to progress, and continue to invest in the innovative people of Bangladesh.

New USAID Bangladesh Mission Director Derrick S. Brown arrived in Dhaka on Saturday, July 14 to take charge of his new duties.  Before joining USAID Bangladesh, he served as USAID Mission Director in Angola from 2016 to 2018
