USAID and Inmarsat Partner for Legal, Traceable and Sustainable Fishing

The United States Agency for International Development’s Oceans and Fisheries Partnership (USAID Oceans) and Inmarsat Global Limited (Inmarsat) haveannounced a new partnership to help commercial fishing crews promote sustainable fishing in Southeast Asia.

From 2011-2017, the U.S. Agency for International Development Climate Change Adaptation Project Preparation Facility for Asia and the Pacific (USAID Adapt Asia-Pacific) assisted countries across the Asia-Pacific region develop 36 adaptation projects that successfully leveraged $576 million in investments.

The United States Agency for International Development’s Oceans and Fisheries Partnership (USAID Oceans) and Yayasan Masyarakat dan Perikanan Indonesia (MDPI), have announced a new partnership for reducing illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing. Through the partnership, they will establish an innovative system for promoting sustainable fisheries and marine biodiversity conservation. Piloted in Bitung, Indonesia, the new electronic regional catch documentation and traceability (CDT) system will help small- and large-scale fisheries promote fair and ethical seafood supply chains and meet regional and international import standards.

Reducing rising rates of HIV transmission among Asian gay men through the innovative use of digital communications is the focus of a special event which opened today in Bangkok. Connecting Asia is a three-day regional consultation – the first event of its kind in Asia – that will help over 150 HIV and community health workers from 22 countries across the region improve how they use information and communication technologies (ICT) to get gay men and men who have sex with men (MSM) to connect with HIV prevention, testing and treatment.

The Women’s Livelihood Bond will provide more than 385,000 Southeast Asian women with access to credit, enhanced linkages to supply chains, and affordable goods and services to improve their livelihoods. The $8-million bond will benefit women in Cambodia, Vietnam and the Philippines. The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), in partnership with Australia’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT), is guaranteeing 50 percent of the loan portfolio’s principal. The bond, structured and managed by Impact Investment Exchange (IIX), is one of the world's first social sustainability bonds with a focus on both social and financial returns.
