Kabul, Afghanistan – The United States government, through the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), donated 100 state-of-the-art ventilators to assist Afghanistan in its fight against COVID-19. The ventilators will be distributed to hospitals in the provinces most affected by COVID-19. This donation delivers on President Donald Trump’s generous offer of these life-saving and critically needed supplies and supports Afghanistan’s urgent response to the pandemic.

U.S., Afghan Governments Launch Program to Give Students Access to Learning Materials

U.S. Embassy Special Chargé d’Affaires Ambassador Hugo Llorens and Chief Executive of Afghanistan, His Excellency Dr. Abdullah Abdullah, launched the Second Textbook Printing and Distribution Project. The project is a United States Agency for International Development (USAID)-funded program for the Afghan Ministry of Education (MoE). USAID will provide $75 million to the MoE to print and distribute 135 million approved textbooks and teacher’s guides for grades 1-12 to all public schools in Afghanistan.

Today sees the first group of young female entrepreneurs graduate from Startup Valley, Afghanistan’s first private business incubator. Operated by AGHAEZ Professional Services and supported by USAID: Promote Women in the Economy (WIE), Startup Valley encourages the entrepreneurial mindset in youth, especially female university graduates. Out of over 150 applications, and 30 selected candidates, these 17 young women completed the incubation program and are now taking their business concepts to market.

Thirteen young women are among the first to graduate from USAID Promote: Women in the Economy’s (WIE) Forward Together Scholarship Doppler Ultrasound course. Held at the Ariana Hospital, the subsidized course gave participants the skills needed to operate an advanced ultrasound machine, which uses color imaging to diagnose a wide variety of health issues, including heart diseases or healthy or complicated pregnancies.

In an effort to strengthen commercial and economic ties between Afghanistan and India through trade and investment, the Governments of India and Afghanistan, along with the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), opened the first “Passage to Prosperity: India-Afghanistan Trade and Investment Show”. The event brings together more than 200 representatives from Afghan companies and more than 800 Indian participants to forge new business connections and discuss potential investment opportunities.

USAID Microfinance Training Program Assists Young Afghan Women Enter Financial Sector

Seventy-five young Afghan women graduated today from USAID Promote: Women in the Economy (WIE)’s Microfinance Institute Training (MFI) Program. Implemented by the Afghanistan Microfinance Association (AMA), the nine-month apprenticeship program equips young women with the technical and managerial skills needed to secure jobs in banking and microfinance by increasing enrollment of women in training programs the MFIs already give to their new employees.

Afghanistan Utility Breaks Ground on Landmark Infrastructure Project

A 10-megawatt solar power plant, the first of its capacity in Afghanistan, is now under construction near the city of Kandahar after a ceremonial groundbreaking event featuring government officials and representatives of the country's national utility Da Afghanistan Breshna Sherkat (DABS) and the Indian company contracted to build and operate the site. The project was made possible by $10 million in incentive funds provided by the U.S. Agency for International Development to mitigate the risk to the contractor, Dynasty Oil & Gas, Ltd.
