Vietnam is currently in the process of developing city and provincial-level socio-economic strategies for 2021-2030, which will set the direction and foundation for the country’s development in the next decade. Realizing the capacity gaps of provincial leaders and officials, the USAID Vietnam Leads project is supporting the Ho Chi Minh National Academy of Politics (HCMA) to conduct various trainings to improve the capacity of provincial leaders and officials in these areas. Earlier this month, with support from USAID, HCMA organized three workshops in Hanoi, Danang, and Ho Chi Minh City titled “Local strategic planning towards 2030, vision to 2045.” The workshops provided tools, models and practices for provincial leaders to help them develop the 2021-2030 socio-economic strategy for their provinces. Out of the 246 participants (211 men, 35 women), 127 (107 men, 20 women) were provincial Chairpersons, Deputy Chairpersons, and provincial departments’ leaders or officials. Other participants included representatives from the Ministry of Planning and Investment, Central Economics Committee, Ministry of Information and Communications, and research institutes.

So What? The USAID-supported training on local strategic planning will build the capacity of provincial leadership to develop the 2021-2030 socio-economic provincial strategy, improving the level of governance in Vietnam and enhancing Vietnam’s competitiveness.
