Vietnam’s Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST) manages the list of items categorized as “Group-2 commodities” for import or export. These group-2 commodities are potentially unsafe and could affect the health of consumers. Vietnamese ministries lack understanding of the definition of “Group-2 commodities” which has caused delays in the process of reviewing and simplifying the list ― a task requested by the Prime Minister through several official instructions. On October 11-13, MOST and USAID’s Governance for Inclusive Growth Program held a consultative workshop with representatives from 14 ministries, the Office of the Government, and business associations, to review, consolidate, and simplify the list of “Group-2 commodities” and to review regulations for the quality assessment of import and export commodities. So What? As USAID works with Vietnam to improve its legal and regulatory framework, simplified import and export regulations will improve the flow of goods, boost the economy and enhance private sector competitiveness.
