National Health Accounts (NHA) data helps the Government of Vietnam (GVN) monitor the total health expenditure and the proportions contributed by the government, donors, private sector, and consumers. It is the only data source for the government to track its progress towards reducing consumer health expenditure and is used to adjust programs and budgets accordingly. However, NHA data is not widely used in Vietnam due to the lack of user-friendly tools to support data analysis. In response, USAID’s Health Finance and Governance Project (HFG) helped the Ministry of Health (MOH) to develop NHA analyses, including an HIV/AIDS sub-analysis, using cutting edge tools and methods. On October 10, HFG and MOH presented the results of five pilot provinces, including Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Nghe An, Khanh Hoa and Can Tho. So What? As USAID helps Vietnam to effectively address health threats, NHA data helps the GVN analyse current health financing at a provincial level and create relevant, unique solutions. It will also support the national HIV response as Vietnam transitions to Social Health Insurance.
