Community-based self and lay HIV testing has the potential to reach those most at risk of HIV and accelerate the detection of new cases. Recently the Nghe An Provincial AIDS Center reported that village health workers and civil society organizations trained and supported by USAID’s Healthy Markets activity identified 352 new HIV cases in 2017, accounting for 30% of new cases detected in the province. At a similar workshop in Hanoi, it was reported that USAID’s Healthy Markets-trained civil society organizations detected 11% of new HIV cases during the first nine months of 2017. So What? The success of community-based HIV testing in Hanoi and Nghe An provinces has contributed to Vietnam’s achievement of HIV goals by increasing the number of people who know their HIV status and the number of people living with HIV who are receiving treatment. This evidence will support the roll-out of community-based HIV testing nationwide.
