As international donor funding for HIV treatment declines, Vietnam is utilizing it’s Social Health Insurance (SHI) system to support HIV treatment and medications for people living with HIV. Over the last nine months, USAID’s Global Health Supply Chain, Procurement and Supply Management (GHSC-PSM) project has provided intensive technical assistance to enhance the capacity of Vietnam Social Security (VSS), which oversees SHI, with managing health commodities, including developing an electronic management information system (eMIS) to monitor supply and usage of SHI-covered HIV medications. On August 17, USAID/Vietnam Mission Director Michael Greene officially handed over the eMIS to VSS General Deputy Director Dr. Pham Luong Son. Both leaders recognized this support as essential and pivotal to VSS’ day-to-day management of the ARV supplies. At the ceremony, the two leaders and their teams also discussed plans for future cooperation between USAID/Vietnam and VSS.
So What? This electronic management system will help Vietnam sustainably manage its supply and usage of SHI-covered drugs, taking the country one step further in its journey to self-reliance in the health sector.
