On May 28-30, the USAID Wildlife Asia activity partnered with the Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry (VCCI) to train representatives of 30 Vietnamese small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) on digital marketing and the risks of wildlife crime. Specialized inspection is a customs clearance procedure in Vietnam that is implemented by line ministries on import and export of goods. A common example of a specialized inspection is food safety inspections by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development. As specialized inspections involve multiple ministries, they can cause major delays in border clearances, costing traders time and money. On May 13-15, USAID’s Trade Facilitation Program and the General Department of Vietnam Customs (GDVC) organized a workshop in Hue to continue legislative reviews of these specialized inspection procedures.

Individuals with early HIV infection have high viral loads, making them highly contagious. Therefore, the ability to conduct early diagnosis of HIV infections is crucial in order to indicate a person’s HIV status just two or three weeks after they are infected. With USAID support, community-based HIV testers in Ho Chi Minh City, Dong Nai, and Hanoi provinces are using new versions of rapid diagnostic tests to identify people who have very recently been infected with HIV, and support them to quickly inform their partners who may be at risk.

Local officials from Vietnam’s remote provinces do not have access to quality, relevant capacity development opportunities to enable them to do their jobs effectively. This is hindering the ability of the country to implement economic and governance reforms that promote continued economic growth and level the playing field for all investors. To address this challenge, USAID recently awarded a $13.3 million contract to Chemonics to implement the USAID Strengthening Provincial Capacity project, which will strengthen the capacity and build the sustainability of local institutions so they can address capacity gaps.

USAID’s Vietnam Low Emission Energy Program (V-LEEP) is working closely with the Government of Vietnam (GVN) at a national and provincial level to develop and implement policies that support scaling up clean energy. The program also works with Vietnam’s private sector to accelerate clean energy development and increase adoption of energy efficient solutions by the country’s industries. Since the GVN introduced incentives for solar energy in 2017, USAID has been working with private companies to build large-scale solar and wind power plants.
