On December 4, USAID’s Raising Voices, Creating Opportunities activity launched Vietnam’s first transition house for persons with disabilities in Thua Thien-Hue province. Located at the Rehabilitation Department of the Health Clinic Center in Phu Vang district, this transition house follows the national construction standards approved by the Ministry of Construction and provides opportunities for persons with disabilities to practice their daily living functions so that they can fully integrate themselves into society and lead an independent life. USAID will support the replication of this model to other districts of Thua Thien-Hue province and also to Quang Tri and Quang Nam provinces.
USAID is supporting the development of a strong and prosperous private sector that bolsters Vietnam’s economic growth by helping remove constraints to, and build the competitiveness of, small and growing businesses in Vietnam, including those led by women and ethnic minority populations. On December 5, USAID joined the Ministry of Planning and Investment and the Vietnam Women’s Union to host the first ever co-creation workshop to gather feedback to inform the design of the upcoming USAID Improving Private Sector Competitiveness project, which will be implemented from 2020 to 2025.
Over the last 10 years, USAID has been supporting Vietnam to develop and implement its national Payment for Forest Environmental Services (PFES) system. Through the PFES system, downstream forest’s service users, including hydropower companies, pay upstream communities for protecting watersheds so that those companies have stable water supply to produce electricity. Since 2011, PFES has generated more than $500 million, which has been paid to thousands of upstream households to protect forests in 44 provinces.
USAID Improves Vietnamese SMEs’ Awareness of Supply Chain Opportunities: The USAID Linkages for Small and Medium Enterprises (USAID LinkSME) project aims to help Vietnamese Small and Medium Enterprises (SME) participate in manufacturing supply chains. From November 20-23, USAID and the Ministry of Planning and Investment’s Agency for Enterprise Development organized workshops in Gia Lai and Thua Thien-Hue provinces to promote partnership opportunities with USAID LinkSME to regional officials and business support organizations.
CLiKC! is an online training portal that offers training materials and useful information in accordance with international standards set by the World Customs Organization. On November 19, the USAID Trade Facilitation Program participated in a one-year review workshop on CliKC! at the General Department of Vietnam Customs (GDVC). While Vietnam Customs was granted access to CLiKC! several years ago, they did not use it frequently until the USAID Trade Facilitation Program began providing Vietnam Customs with technical assistance and training.
