International classification training for primary care providers strengthens health reform in Ukraine

In July 2019, ahead of the July 21 Verkhovna Rada (Parliament) elections in Ukraine, Roman Humeniuk decided to contribute to change in his community by chairing the Precinct Election Commission (PEC) in the Lviv Oblast village of Kurovichi.  This considerable task was complicated by the fact that polling stations and public buildings in Ukraine are often not accessible, and Humeniuk uses a wheelchair.

The ongoing conflict in Eastern Ukraine has created significant challenges for small- and medium-sized agricultural businesses in the region, including those producing and processing meat. Since 2014, cattle and pig production has decreased by 44 percent at commercial farms and by 23 percent in private households in Donetsk Oblast.

Rashyd Bilalov, an 18-year-old student from Karazin Kharkiv National University, is now known among his peers for his successful efforts leading discussions on democratic governance and fair elections. In early 2019, before Ukraine’s presidential election, Rashyd organized the Democracy Talks project – later renamed Freedom to Speak Up – at his university. At first, the project’s primary objective was to organize weekly discussions on the importance of elections and citizens’ roles in shaping government policy for youth.
