Several generations of Iryna Vasylieva’s family have maintained a beekeeping tradition. Iryna’s great-grandfather headed a collective farm in the 1930s. During the 1932-33 Great Famine, he allowed fellow villagers to gather ears of grain in the fields, lost his position for doing so, and was sent to work at a collective farm apiary as a beekeeper.
Svitlana (name changed) dreamed of having a beauty salon since she was a schoolgirl. She was full of plans and ideas, but could barely save enough to survive, let alone to start a business. To her, the hope that she might find help was only a useless delusion. Sitting in her studio now, she feels like a different person.
“Back then, I had only myself to count on to make my dreams come true.”
Entrepreneur Valentyna Metiolkina from Severodonetsk, Luhansk Oblast, inherited a travel bag sewing business from her father. Years before, her father had seen the utility of good strong bags that small businesses could use to haul their products to market.
“My father quickly saw the demand and began making them,” Valentyna explained.
She inherited the business after her father died In 2012, but was pregnant at the time and had neither the time nor a desire to take over his business. Several years later, she changed her mind.
Costless, an Android and iOS app, helps grocery shoppers save money and time by comparing prices and finding hot deals. The app checks details on products and stores, provides shoppers with a savings calculator, and makes it easier for them to order online and track their spending history. Anna Karmazina, Costless’ CEO and founder, says the company’s purpose is to “help save the planet’s resources by decreasing overproducing and waste.”
Antonina Borodina, lived and worked in Toretsk, Donetsk Oblast, before moving to Kyiv to complete her studies. Last year she returned to develop her business in Toretsk.
After graduating from the Kyiv Higher Vocational School, where she stood out because of her sewing skills, Antonina opened a sewing workshop in Kyiv focused on making costumes for athletes and dancers. The high cost of rental space in Kyiv forced her to move her business to her hometown.
Her simple marketing and advertising efforts quickly achieved results.
