Capricious and opaque legal decisions continue to be one of the main problems facing the Ukrainian justice system. But Ukrainians aren’t waiting for the system to change on its own. Activists and startups are working to improve the legal system to safeguard the rights of all citizens. One such startup is the Court on the Palm, an open-data online application that helps solve two main problems facing the judicial system: non-transparency and inconsistency of judicial practice.
With the introduction of a new online service, Ukrainians can now review historical reports and accident information about a car that interests them, without middlemen or bribes.
Oleksiy, a businessman in the fruit and vegetable sector, often has to drive around the country to set up deals with growers and distributors, check the quality of the goods, and pick up various items. His company has several vehicles in its fleet at any given time, both passenger cars and cargo vans. Every vehicle that Oleksiy owns is used and the fleet constantly needs replacements.
Serhiy Novosad is an HIV case finder for the NGO Penitentiary Initiative in Mykolaiv Oblast. As part of USAID’s Serving Life project, Serhiy works to motivate people who inject drugs (PWID) and their peers to get tested for HIV and provides HIV self-test kits. He refers those who test positive for a second test to confirm their status and helps them access care, if needed.
Olha Ovsiannykova moved from Donetsk to Sviatohirsk in 2014 after Russia-backed rebels took over the city and the eastern part of the oblast. In Sviatohirsk, she met several unemployed women who had kids with disabilities. The urge to help them was so great that Olha decided to start the Boomerang of Kindness charitable organization to raise money for the children’s medical treatment.
Most people do not want to take an HIV/AIDS test unless they have obvious symptoms. No one wants to believe that they are at risk. Medical experts know that a person is at a higher risk of having HIV positive if they have certain symptoms or diseases, but even a doctor might miss subtle clues that a test is needed.
