Gusau – On August 20, 2020, the U.S. government, through the President’s Malaria Initiative (PMI), donated 3.1 million bed nets in Nigeria’s Zamfara State as part of a national campaign to provide enough nets for every Nigerian to be protected from the deadly disease every night. The PMI program in Nigeria is jointly implemented by the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in coordination with the Government of Nigeria.

The life-saving nets will go to every local government area in Zamfara state. The bed net distribution is a critical component of the ongoing effort to end malaria in Nigeria, which results in more than 90,000 deaths per year.

“Malaria is the leading killer of children in Nigeria and brings illness and loss of productivity to too many families,” Dr. Jose Tchofa, USAID’s Senior Malaria Advisor, said at the handover ceremony. “If we all work together to protect ourselves from being bitten by sleeping under a bed net every night, we can control malaria for the good health of everyone in Zamfara and across Nigeria.”

As part of its efforts to deepen private sector involvement in Nigeria’s health sector, the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) accepted a contribution from a leading indigenous oil firm Belemaoil Producing Nigeria Limited today to support USAID’s activities to eradicate HIV and AIDS in Akwa Ibom State. Under an agreement signed on August 13, 2020, Belemaoil will contribute to the provision of 75,000 rapid test kits to Akwa Ibom state government through USAID’s HIV/AIDS program.  The kits will specifically be used to test high risk adolescents and young women as well as children to prevent mother-to-child transmission and help health clinics improve antenatal services.

Haykin joined Adamawa State First Lad Hajiya Lami Ahmadu Finitri, at the virtual launch of a new activity designed to protect children and their households made vulnerable or orphaned by the HIV/AIDS epidemic in Nigeria’s Adamawa State. The activity was recently launched in Bauchi State as well.

Lagos to develop an electrification plan to improve power service delivery

On July 14, 2020, U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) Mission Director Stephen M. Haykin joined Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu in a virtual ceremony to sign a Letter of Cooperation under which USAID will support Lagos to develop an electrification plan to improve power service delivery in the state. Lagos will implement the new Integrated Resource Plan (IRP) with support from the U.S. government’s Power Africa Nigeria Power Sector Program (NPSP) administered by USAID. The IRP will serve as a roadmap to guide development of a comprehensive, long-term electrification strategy for the state to improve planning and decision-making on power sector investments that will lead to more accessible and reliable electricity services in Lagos.

Haykin joined with Governor Hope Uzodinma in a virtual signing ceremony to formalize a new partnership with Imo State to improve the management and delivery of water and sanitation (WASH) services to help people live healthier lives through reliable access to clean water. Today’s Memorandum of Understanding outlines commitments between USAID and Imo State to jointly develop a professionally managed, commercially oriented, and accountable state Water Board. This will be accomplished by improving the Water Board’s financial viability, and strengthening policy, institutional, and regulatory frameworks for better WASH service delivery.

 On July 14, 2020, U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) Mission Director Stephen M. Haykin joined Bauchi State Commissioner of Women’s Affairs and Child Development, Hajara Jibrin at the virtual launch of a new activity designed to protect more than 76,000 vulnerable children and their households made vulnerable or orphaned by the HIV/AIDS epidemic in Nigeria’s Bauchi and Adamawa states.
The $19.2 million Integrated Child Health and Social Services Award Region 4 (ICHSSA 4) activity is among four new USAID Orphan and Vulnerable Children (OVC) that will reach more than 450,000 people in six states.  The activity’s integrated approach will both protect young people from the stigma of association with HIV, and help eliminate the perception of people living with HIV as anything less than fully productive community members.

U.S. Supports Upgrade of State Emergency Operations Centers to Respond to COVID-19

Development assistance under 2015 agreement reaches $1.8 billion

On June 2, 2020, the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) announced notification of an additional $234.5 million in development assistance to continue support for the goals outlined in the 2015 bilateral Development Objectives Assistance Agreement (DOAG) between the U.S. and Nigerian governments. Most of the new funding, more than $160 million, will finance new and existing activities to improve public health in Nigeria. Another $34 million will help improve agriculture and water systems, while $21 million will enhance education, and $19.5 million will be dedicated to strengthen good governance.

 USAID Partners with Taraba State to Improve Delivery of Water and Sanitation Services

The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) joined with Taraba State Executive Governor H.E. Dairus Dickson Ishaku to formalize a new partnership to improve the management and delivery of water and sanitation (WASH) services to help people live healthier lives through reliable access to clean water. A Memorandum of Understanding signed online on May 21, 2020, outlines commitments between USAID and Taraba State to jointly develop a professionally managed, commercially oriented, and accountable state Water Board. This will be accomplished by improving the Water Board’s financial viability, and strengthening policy, institutional, and regulatory frameworks for better WASH service delivery.
