From June 15 -October 15, USAID’s “My Armenia” project, implemented in partnership with the Smithsonian Institution, and in collaboration with Solimar International, launched a four-month virtual technical assistance program for Destination Management Organization (DMO) development. 55 private sector and local community representatives from My Armenia’s five target regions followed a series of online lessons aimed at increasing knowledge on establishing, managing and building DMO capacity. As a result of the training, DMOs are being established in Lori and Vayots Dzor, and two more are being established in Syunik. Once inaugurated these DMOs will be instrumental in building regional attractions, activities, and hospitality options that will help increase cultural heritage tourism and encourage a lengthier period of stay per tourist, thereby increasing cash flows from visitors into remote communities.
