Today, the Government of Tanzania and the U.S. Government, through the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), commissioned a community-supported water supply scheme in Msowero village in Kilosa District Council, Morogoro Region. This scheme is part of a broader program to improve water systems in the Morogoro and Iringa regions. It will provide access to safe and clean drinking water to nearly 14,000 people.

Tuberculosis (TB) closely follows HIV and malaria as a major cause of illness and mortality in Tanzania, which is among the 30 highest-burden countries for TB and TB/HIV coinfection. USAID’s tuberculosis strategy in Tanzania supports the National Tuberculosis and Leprosy Program (NTLP) to address systemic and operational challenges to preventing, detecting, and treating the disease.

USAID Tanzania’s gender and youth efforts serve the critical unifying role of integrating gender equality, women’s empowerment, and youth inclusion across a broad range of activities. Such efforts focus on strengthening conditions that facilitate inclusion and contributions of women and youth on a national level. Our activities also promote women’s equality and youth inclusion at the local government and community levels, and ensure Tanzanian women and youth are healthier, better educated, and more productive.

USAID’s maternal and child health (MCH) programs in Tanzania support activities in line with the Ending Preventable Child and Maternal Mortality Initiative, which prioritizes improved health for the most vulnerable women, girls, newborns, and children under five. At the national level, USAID provides technical assistance to the Ministry of Health, Community Development, Gender, Elderly and Children  on the mainland and Zanzibar to enable the delivery of life-saving interventions for mothers, newborns, and children.

USAID began supporting family planning in Tanzania in the late 1980s with a focus on increasing the prevalence rate of modern contraceptives, proving instrumental in building Tanzania’s national program. Under the U.S. Government’s Global Health Initiative (GHI), USAID’s family planning programs are integrated with other health services and contribute to the GHI goals of reducing maternal mortality and improving child survival.
