Today, we mark the third anniversary of the murder of Boris Nemtsov, who was one of Russia's most ardent and articulate supporters of democracy and transparency. With his death, Russia lost a courageous and charismatic champion in its ongoing struggle for freedom. At one time a leading candidate to succeed President Yeltsin, Nemtsov represented the hope of his countrymen for a path toward further democratization in Russia. Despite the closing political space in Russia, Mr. Nemtsov was undaunted and tireless in his battle for a more open, democratic country.
The United States stands with those Russians who, in following the example of Nemtsov, seek a freer, more democratic Russia. We call for the perpetrators of his murder to be brought to justice.
