USAID supports agriculture development in Guinea to improve income and nutrition for smallholder farmers.

At independence, Guinea was a food exporter, with a particular focus on bananas. Today, it imports an estimated third of the rice it consumes each year. The overall agricultural productivity is reduced by weak linkages between farmers and markets. This situation is characterized by limited access to reliable high-quality seeds and fertilizer, lack of information on new agricultural technologies and best practices, and barriers to the investments required to add value to agricultural produce.

USAID assists the government of Guinea to reduce poverty and hunger through inclusive agriculture sector growth. Private sector partners are invited to leverage technical expertise, innovations, networks, and financial resources leading to the advancement of Guinea`s agricultural sector.

In order to attract and retain young people in the agricultural sector, USAID supports young entrepreneurs through the AVENIR youth internship program where they design and implement innovative ideas that can improve income, agricultural production, and nutrition for smallholder farmers. Parallel to this, USAID employs a facilitative market systems approach, interacting with and linking to each other a broad range of actors from the public and private sectors.
