USAID continues to support the Government of Iraq (GOI) and Iraqi civil society to foster a system of governance that is democratic, accountable, and responsive in ways that benefit all Iraqis. USAID works with its Iraqi partners to enhance the transparency of political processes, natural resource management, and ultimately service delivery to all citizens. Throughout its work, USAID seeks to better integrate civil society actors into these processes. 

The USAID-funded $172 million five-year Iraq Governance and Performance Accountability (IGPA/Takamul) project supports a variety of strategic, Iraqi-led reform initiatives that improve resource management, empower pragmatic leadership, and ultimately manifest in improved services (such as water, solid waste management, and electricity) for all citizens. As the project's Arabic name Takamul, or "integration", implies, the project works to better integrate governance functions within the provinces, promote cooperation between the central and provincial governments, and integrate civil society into this process to ensure accountability, transparency, and citizen buy-in. 

USAID continues to support Iraq's democratic consolidation through the five-year $25.4 million Iraq Provincial Elections Activity (IPEA). With the potential for parliamentary elections in June 2021 and provincial elections before the end of 2021, IPEA is working to strengthen the integrity of Iraq's democratic processes by working with Iraq's Independent High Electoral Commission (IHEC) to improve the management and aministration of IRaq's electoral processes. IPEA also supports many Iraq civil society organizations to amplify voter education efforts and enable greater citizen oversight of electoral processes and the performance of elected officials. Following the elections, IPEA will work with civil soeicy and political entities to collect and share findings, observations, and actionable recommendations that the IHEC Board and other relevant government authorities can use to strengthen future Iraqi elections.
