Challenges like the increasing demand for food production, the long term risks of environmental degradation, and rapidly shifting social dynamics continue to pose complex challenges to feeding the world’s population.

USAID has been working in the Philippines for over 50 years, and a big part of our assistance is in education because we believe education is crucial for development—both as individuals and for the country as a whole. With education, you can make well informed choices and to receive better opportunities.
The United States government continues to support the Department of Education in our common goal of improving the quality of education in the Philippines, so that young boys and girls like you could go to school and learn skills that will help you succeed in the future.
Since 2014, Tagbilaran City has been one of USAID’s partner cities of under the Cities Development Initiative. Through this partnership, USAID provides a range of technical assistance in economic growth, health, energy, environment, governance and education to help them realize their full potential as engines of inclusive and resilient growth for their respective regions.
For over 50 years, USAID has been a committed development partner of the Philippines. In pursuit of our mutual objective to improve the health of families, during the last five years alone, USAID provided approximately 8 billion pesos through our projects that support family planning, maternal and child health and tuberculosis control programs in the country.
World AIDS Day is very important to me, and my staff knows that. It really goes back to an experience that I had when I was ambassador to Tanzania. My father is a retired physician, and he had been practicing medicine back in my home place for 60 years. He came to visit me to Tanzania, and I asked him if he would come with me on a project. And on the project, we were delivering food to AIDS widows, AIDS shut-ins, so people who were isolated and at home and completely dependent upon donations for food.
Tomorrow, on World AIDS Day, the United States reaffirms our commitment to ending HIV/AIDS. This day also serves as a remembrance of the millions who have lost their lives to this disease. Nevertheless, we remain encouraged by the tremendous progress made by the global health community in controlling HIV/AIDS.
You know, I often say, as Administrator at USAID, that the purpose of foreign assistance must be to end the need for its existence. And so, our goal, as an Agency, is to work to foster self-reliance and help host countries on their own journey to both self-reliance and prosperity. In this, we have a wonderful strong partner in India. Together, as we have seen here at GES, we are lifting lives. We are creating opportunities. But as you've heard from both Jennifer and Kathy, I think the important thing is doing so, not only here, but jointly, we are doing so in the region and around the world.
