USAID has rehabilitated more than 100 peripheral health units across Sierra Leone to increase access to a range of essential water, sanitation and hygiene components.

The USAID health program in Sierra Leone addresses key U.S. government priorities in technical areas such as malaria, maternal and child health, global health security, and neglected tropical diseases. Since the end of the Ebola crisis in 2016, USAID has worked closely with the Government of Sierra Leone and other donors to ensure that basic health services are accessible to those most in need, particularly women and children. USAID also continues to collaborate with the Ministry of Health and Sanitation and implementing partners to strengthen the country’s capacity to prevent, detect, and respond to human and animal infectious disease threats.

Selected as a President’s Malaria Initiative (PMI) focus country in 2017, USAID supports the implementation of key evidence-based malaria interventions in alignment with the National Malaria Control Program. This includes strengthening monitoring and evaluation capacity, supporting vector control activities, and improving malaria case management practices. 

USAID activities strengthen Sierra Leone’s fragile health system and contribute to improvements in the delivery of quality health services at facilities across the country.

• Health Governance: We provide technical assistance and capacity building support to the Government of Sierra Leone to improve the accountability of health service delivery activities by engaging communities and civil societies through community platforms and the media.

• Supply Chain: We strengthen the national health supply chain system, procure and distribute malaria commodities, and improve the availability of essential medicines through last mile distribution efforts.

• Human Resources: We build the management and technical skills of health professionals with a focus on district health management teams.

• Service Delivery: In select districts, we complement the Government of Sierra Leone’s basic package of services by building capacity and supporting quality improvement activities at both community and facility levels of care.

• Health Information Systems: We strengthen data collection, analysis, and use at the national level.
