USAID’s Reading for All Program is a three-year, $3.88 million activity that works to improve early grade reading outcomes among children with disabilities in grades 1 – 3. Implemented in 6,775 schools in the 16 National Early Grade Reading Program focus districts (Banke, Surkhet, Bhaktapur, Kaski, Dhankuta, Saptari, Parsa, Rupandehi, Manang, Mustang, Bardiya, Dang, Dolpa, Kailaki, Kanchanpur and Dadeldhura), the activity strengthens the Government of Nepal’s (GON’s) institutional capacity at the federal, provincial and local levels to implement its constitutional and policy commitments to disability inclusive education.

This USAID program promotes a system to contain and prevent the spread of radicalism and violent extremist beliefs in Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) prisons and rehabilitate and reintegrate previously radicalized prisoners into society upon their release. The Connect for Peace (C4P) Activity is a 36-month initiative to support peace efforts in Liberia, particularly in Nimba County and Monrovia. C4P activities target 230 men, women, and youth across Nimba County and at least 50,000 residents of selected electoral districts in greater Monrovia. As revealed by the project’s conflict analysis, Liberians have never experienced the benefits of a healthy social contract between citizens and the state. Land disputes, ethnic rivalries and clashes, and limited state capacity for peaceful resolution of disputes explain Liberia’s propensity for conflict. For positive peace to take root and prevail, Liberians must find ways to reconcile, overcome mutual mistrust, and live in harmony.

From November 24–25, Syrian Arab Republic Government (SARG) and Government of the Russian Federation (GoRF) airstrikes targeted armed opposition group (AOG)-held areas west and south of Aleppo city, marking the first aerial bombardment in northwestern Syria since the establishment of a de-militarized zone by the Government of Turkey (GoT) and GoRF in mid-September, according to international media. The airstrikes were reportedly in retaliation for an alleged AOG chemical attack on SARGcontrolled areas in Aleppo city on November 24; as of early December, the UN had not confirmed the use of chemical weapons.

For over 60 years, USAID has partnered with the Government of Nepal (GON) to design and implement a variety of social and behavior change communication (SBCC) programs across the country. Under Nepal’s new federal structure, provincial and municipal level governments are now expected to lead local health programs. USAID introduced its Breakthrough ACTION Nepal Activity to identify and respond to SBCC gaps and opportunities in partnership with Nepal’s Ministry of Health and Population and local government entities.
