USAID Peru offered a reception to recognize USAID’s long-standing partners, and gave the Wiñay Award to three of them who have made significant and sustained contributions to Peru’s development. Wiñay is a Quechua word meaning “progress”.

La Agencia de los Estados Unidos para el Desarrollo Internacional (USAID) y la Administración Nacional de Aeronáutica y del Espacio de los Estados Unidos (NASA) anunciaron hoy el proyecto SERVIR Amazonía de cinco años que utilizará imágenes satelitales para abordar los desafíos ambientales y de desarrollo en la cuenca del Amazonas.

The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and the U.S. National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) today announced a five-year project that will use satellite imagery to address environment and development challenges across the Amazon Basin.

USAID works with local communities, Peruvian research organizations, and U.S. universities to help address this critical threat to the Amazon.

The Amazon rainforest, the most biodiverse region on Earth, composes more than 60 percent of Peru’s territory.  In recent decades, illegal logging in Peru has intensified and threatened future of the Peruvian Amazon.   USAID strengthens Peru’s forest sector as a means to combat environmental-crime and related security threats, uphold bilateral trade agreements, and sustainably manage forest resources to conserve biodiversity and reduce carbon emissions.
