U.S. Ambassador Announces US$100,000 in TC Yasa Relief Funding

Today, the U.S. Ambassador to Fiji Joseph Cella announced the approval of US$100,000 (FJD$204,550) in International Disaster Assistance from the U.S. Agency for International Development’s Bureau for Humanitarian Assistance (USAID/BHA). These funds will be used to support the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies and their local partner, the Fiji Red Cross Society, on the ground to respond to urgent shelter, water, hygiene, and other critical needs in communities impacted by Tropical Cyclone Yasa, one of the most powerful storms to ever hit Fiji.

Due to geographic isolation and limited manufacturing capabilities, communities across Fiji and other Pacific island countries often lack access to sufficient water and sanitation facilities. As a result, when extreme weather events—including cyclones, flooding, and tsunamis—occur in the Pacific region, limited access to water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) supplies and other relief commodities often hinders local populations’ ability to meet their immediate needs. U.S. Government Delivers on PNG Electrification Partnership Promise

U.S. Ambassador to Papua New Guinea, Vanuatu, and the Solomon Islands Erin McKee today launched the five-year, PGK 200 million (US $57 million) United States Agency for International Development (USAID)-PNG Electrification Partnership (PEP) that will provide electricity to at least 200,000 households in Papua New Guinea.

United States Presents Project Management Certificates in Labasa
