Last night, the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) Coordinator for Power Africa, Andrew M. Herscowitz, and the Power Africa team received the Samuel J. Heyman Service to America Medal (called the "Sammy"), as the 2018 National Security and International Affairs Winner, awarded by the Partnership for Public Service. This national honor for excellence in government recognizes the unique public-private partnership model of Power Africa, and its progress in bringing electricity to the over 600 million people living in sub-Saharan Africa without power.
The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) expresses its condolences for the people affected by the 7.5 magnitude earthquake and tsunami that struck Central Sulawesi in the Republic of Indonesia on September 28. This tragic natural disaster has claimed over 844 lives, and left over 48,000 displaced. The United States stands with the people of Indonesia in their hour of need, and USAID is providing immediate assistance to people displaced by the earthquake and tsunami.
The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) has deployed a Disaster Assistance Response Team (DART) to the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) to boost current efforts by the United States and the Government of the DRC to contain the outbreak of Ebola in Eastern DRC. The response to this Ebola outbreak is a priority for the U.S. Government since efforts to contain and prevent the disease from spreading to neighboring countries also keep it from coming to the United States.
U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) Administrator Mark Green will travel to Accra, Ghana from September 30 to October 4, in support of First Lady Melania Trump's trip to the country. Administrator Green will meet with Ghanaian Government officials to discuss the country's "Ghana Beyond Aid" agenda. Administrator Green will also visit U.S. foreign assistance programming in the Northern Region of the country, and will meet with USAID and State Department staff.
U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) Senior Deputy Assistant Administrator for the Bureau of Economic Growth, Education, and Environment Michelle Bekkering will lead the U.S. Government Delegation to the 2018 Women 20 (W20) Summit. The Summit will take place in Buenos Aires, Argentina from October 2-3, 2018. Bekkering concurrently serves as the Agency's Senior Coordinator for Gender Equality and Women's Empowerment.
We're here, of course, because while many gains have been achieved in the fight against tuberculosis, I think we all know that we have much, much to do. It remains the world's number-one infectious disease killer, continuing to claim nearly two million lives each and every year. TB also disproportionately affects the most vulnerable people in our society: those who live in poverty and marginalized communities. Too many individuals with TB also face stigma and discrimination which discourages them from treatment, which means that our approach must be truly multisectoral.
Today, U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) Administrator Mark Green announced a new business model to support the fight to end the world's number-one infectious killer, tuberculosis (TB). Through $30 million in funding and a new performance-based Global Accelerator to End TB, USAID will catalyze investments to meet the target set by the United Nations High-Level Meeting on TB of treating 40 million people with the disease by 2022.
I'm proud of the role that USAID, under the Trump administration, has played to improve the lives and opportunities of young people throughout sub-Saharan Africa. Since 2008, through our maternal and child health programs, we have helped save the lives of 4.6 million children globally, the majority of whom live in sub-Saharan Africa. Our work also strengthens health systems within countries, so that the work will continue in the years ahead, led by our partner countries themselves.
U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) Administrator Mark Green met with the Bangladeshi Foreign Secretary, Md. Shahidul Haque, on Wednesday in New York City at the United Nations General Assembly. The Administrator expressed appreciation for the continued compassion shown by the Bangladeshi people and Government toward the nearly one million Rohingya who have fled ethnic cleansing in Burma. He emphasized that the U.S. Government's priority is to support political processes that will enable the safe, dignified, and voluntary return of refugees to Burma.
Many billions of dollars have been generously provided to alleviate global hunger. But they are being robbed of their full value by crisis, conflict, and poor governance. So, not just terrorism, but corruption and poor governance, as well. The Agency that I am privileged to lead, USAID, delivered more than three billion dollars of food assistance to 64 million people across 50 countries last year alone. American taxpayers generously offered this assistance to ease immediate suffering as well as to lay a foundation for long-term resilience -- an ideal to which all people aspire. Yet disaster, not natural disaster, like a drought or a flood, but man-made disaster in the form of inhumane, authoritarian governance and willful disregard of the laws of war, are destroying any chances that these purposes will actually be met.
I'd like to welcome our special guest innovators ... I'd also like to thank Concordia for hosting us and Grand Challenges Canada for their work on the Humanitarian Grand Challenge, great partners, both. In the field of development, these are exciting times. We have new technologies, medicines, and new approaches that are making an immeasurable difference in lifting lives and building communities. As we all know, these are also challenging times. Especially on the humanitarian front. Approaching 70 million people displaced. Nearly unprecedented levels of need, and in many cases, no end in sight. These challenges were what brought Secretary Mordaunt and I together this past February to announce the first call for Humanitarian Grand Challenge proposals. We're together again today to share the innovations that our finalists have put forward.
So, 30 years ago, I began my career in development in a little village in Kenya, a village where we had no running water, no electricity, no telephone. But in the entire year that I was there, not one student ever asked me for money. They might ask me for extra lessons. They might ask me for help with books. But they never once asked for a handout. Thirty years later, I'm the Administrator of USAID. And I'm in Africa again, this time in the Somali region of Ethiopia, an area going into its third year of drought.
Today, the Administrator for the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), the Honorable Mark Green, and the Secretary of State for the Department for International Development (DFID) of the United Kingdom, The Right Honourable Penny Mordaunt, M.P., announced 23 intended finalists for Creating Hope in Conflict: A Humanitarian Grand Challenge, at the 2018 edition of the Concordia Annual Summit in New York City.

Vice President Mike Pence announced today at the 73rd regular session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, NY, more than $48 million in additional humanitarian U.S. assistance for Venezuelans affected by the man-made crisis in Venezuela.

U.S. Ambassador Rena Bitter visited U.S. government funded relief projects for people affected by recent flash floods and met with Provincial Governor Leth Xayaphone and local officials to discuss recovery efforts during her recent trip to Attapeu Province on September 10-11, 2018 as part of the United States’ ongoing support to the Government of Laos’ efforts to help local people affected by the disaster.
