At the “Passage to Prosperity: India-Afghanistan International Trade and Investment Show” held September 24 – 26, 2019 in New Delhi, India, the USAID-supported Kabul Carpet Export Center (KCEC) showcased a range of carpets that are made by Afghan manufacturers.
The show was an opportunity for Afghan carpet manufacturers to meet with two major Indian rug manufacturers, OBEETEE and Saraswatii Global. Mr. Abhinay Gupta, vice president of OBEETEE, said “my company produces carpets only in India, but after visiting the KCEC booth we would like to explore the idea of working with Afghan manufacturers and expand our production line through KCEC in Afghanistan as well.”
Mr. Jai Sharma, the lead designer for Saraswatii Global, which also operates in the United States, said he was “deeply impressed with the quality of the carpets displayed.” He mentioned that as a designer, he sees ways in which Afghan-made carpets can enhance both his designs and the company’s other lines.
As part of the show, KCEC moderated the Home Décor Panel, which brought together experts from the Indian and Afghan home fashion markets to share their views on the quality and uniqueness of Afghan handmade carpets. During the session, panelists discussed opportunities and challenges for entry and expansion in the Indian market.
The Passage to Prosperity show was an opportunity to explain to other potential international buyers why Afghan carpets are recognized worldwide for their superior wool, natural color dyes, knotting methods and both traditional and contemporary patterns.
