Trachoma, an eye infection that is the world’s leading cause of blindness, plagues millions of people in Mozambique due to poor sanitary conditions. But a collaboration between the government and international partners such as USAID is helping reduce the risk of infection.
In Pemba, Mozambique, extreme weather has a devastating impact on the homes and lives of citizens. There and across the globe, USAID has partnered with communities and local governments to strengthen their resilience against threats posed by weather and climate change.
Cities are here to stay. But when it comes to how we share them, USAID believes in one fundamental principle: Growing cities can help to drive inclusive development; but local governments, organizations and communities must work together to ensure that urban growth does not overwhelm the ability to deliver basic services, and that the benefits of urbanization are felt by society’s most vulnerable.
Mozambique has historically struggled with the process of issuing construction permits. The slow issuing process was identified by the private sector as a major obstacle impeding businesses. However, things are starting to change for the better. The latest World Bank Doing Business 2014 report shows a substantial improvement in the country's construction permit indicator, jumping 46 places to 77th from 123rd in the most recent rankings.
