Today the President released his Fiscal Year (FY) 2019 Budget request of $39.3 billion for the State Department and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). This Budget supports the President's commitment to serve the needs of American citizens, ensure their safety, promote their prosperity, preserve their rights, and defend their values, as outlined in the President's National Security Strategy. It advances U.S. foreign-policy goals through targeted investments that protect U.S. national security, furthers American interests at home and abroad, sets countries on the path towards self-reliance, and provides funds for USAID's role in supporting global security and stability. Each year, USAID responds to man-made and natural disasters in dozens of countries, by providing humanitarian assistance that saves lives, alleviates suffering, and reduces the social and economic impact of catastrophes. A safer world means a safer America.

Our objective is to support partners to become self-reliant and capable of leading their own development journeys. By reducing the reach of conflict, preventing the spread of pandemic disease, and counteracting the drivers of violence, instability, transnational crime and other security threats, this Budget will help bring us closer to that day. It is designed to promote American prosperity through investments that expand markets for U.S. exports; create a level playing field for U.S. businesses; support more stable, resilient, and democratic societies; and address crises.

For USAID, the FY 2019 Budget request includes $16.8 billion the Agency fully or partially manages. With this funding, the dedicated men and women of USAID will continue to help developing countries make progress on a path to self-reliance and prosperity that will ultimately end the need for foreign assistance.
